Research

LabexMed supports collaborative and interdisciplinary research based on a specific scientific program and calls for projects.

Scientific program

One of LabexMed’s major goals is to advance the practice of interdisciplinary research in Mediterranean studies. The Themed Workshops for Interdisciplinary Research have been set up to promote dialogue between the different disciplines represented within LabexMed, but also with Earth Sciences, Biology and Environmental Sciences.

This scientific program is established with the participation of all LabexMed partner units. An Observatory for Interdisciplinary Practices was also created to assess the implementation of interdisciplinarity within the research projects initiated by LabexMed.

The Themed Workshops for Interdisciplinary Research were redefined in 2016 by working groups involving researchers from partner laboratories and members of LabexMed’s Observatory for Interdisciplinary Practices.

The research supported by LabexMed must now focus around the question “How to rethink the Mediterranean today?”

The “Mediterranean” topic can be studied through three axes of research:

  • Socio-economic, political and legal processes.
  • Cultural processes and Heritage dynamics. Circulation of knowledge and objects.
  • Territorial dynamics and human-environment interactions.

Calls for projects

LabexMed supports collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects through 4 calls for projects reserved for members of its partner units:

  • Pilot projects
  • Programmed Interdisciplinary Research Actions in the Mediterranean (APRIMED)
  • Support for applications for the PACA Region Platform Call for Projects
  • Support for applications for the PACA Region General Research Call for Projects (APOG).

Pilot projects

This call aims to bring out Pilot research projects on exploratory topics, focused on the implementation of interdisciplinarity.

Projects will have a twofold purpose: to develop an interdisciplinary issue and to build a team to address it.

Projects must be collaborative and interdisciplinary, require the participation of two LabexMed partner units, and can set up further national and international partnerships.

The recipients benefit from an 18-month financial support and from an administrative and scientific backing of their project. Projects that have achieved their objectives are then supported in their search for funds for their further development.

The funding of any research project entails the participation of its leaders in the activities organised by the LabexMed Observatory for Interdisciplinary Practices.

The last two Calls for Pilot Projects were launched in January and June 2017 for the selection of the fifth and sixth waves of projects.

Programmed Interdisciplinary Research Actions in the Mediterranean (APRIMED)

The Call for Programmed Interdisciplinary Research Actions in the Mediterranean aims to support collaborative, interdisciplinary and international research in the form of 2-year research programs with defined deliverables.

In contrast to Pilot Projects, no preparatory phase is included in these programs. The programs propose a new research, in reference to the state of the art, which contributes to rethink the Mediterranean today. They necessarily involve at least one international partner.

Given the LabexMed project schedule, the last APRIMED call was launched in January 2017.

Co-funding of the applications for the PACA Region Platform Call for Projects

The Platform component of the PACA region call for research projects supports the establishment of shared technological platforms by regional research teams.

Faced with the increase of digital data of multiple kinds, LabexMed wants to support and co-finance projects which create or develop digital platforms for the Human and Social Sciences taking into account issues of durability, accessibility and interoperability. These platforms will serve Mediterranean studies with a shared regional dimension. .

Co-funding of the applications for the PACA Region General Research Call for Projects (APOG)

LabexMed proposes to co-finance collaborative inter-laboratory research projects applying to the PACA Region Research Call for projects in the “General” section (APOG), on Mediterranean studies.

The “General” component of the PACA region’s call for projects supports ambitious integrated research projects involving at least two research teams and requiring the acquisition of one or more pieces of equipment essential to the realization of the project, and the potential reception of doctoral students within the partner laboratories.

The objectives of the “General” component of the PACA Region Research Call for projects are: • to promote inter-laboratory collaborations within the region • to strengthen interdisciplinarity and the cross-disciplinary role of the Social and Human Sciences • to encourage the emergence of new ambitious projects, particularly in connection with Regional Strategic Activity Areas • to promote the emergence of structuring projects, likely to become eligible for national, European or international calls for projects.
